First Drive- Volkswagen Golf

Since 1974 when the Golf is unveiled, Golf is sold for over thirty million and achieved to be the world’s third best-selling car. Last year, it had the best car of the year award so it has become an icon of the compact hatchback class. Let’s start our first drive test.
Design

Golf VII has an MQB platform which has been used by Volkswagen for cars whose engine places transversely on the car. The new platform reduces Golf’s curb weight by a hundred kilos and the new Golf consumes %23 per cent less than the outgoing model.

Exterior Design, compared to outgoing models, though the new Golf has lots of similarities in terms of design, it is 56 mm longer and 13 wider than the Golf 6. Thanks to the low height and bigger wheelbase new Golf has much more grip than the previous version and the body of the new Golf has a 0.27cd wind rubbing coefficient which is marvellous for such kind of car aerodynamically.

İnterior Design, The general architecture is stylish and well-arrayed so it feels like a more premium car such as A3 or A class. Stylish interior and Audi R8 style steering wheel have staggering combine in order to make car long way cruise as well as hot-hatch.

Efficiency

New Golf consumes less than the outgoing model thanks to the new body design and technology. Although it didn’t achieve an aim that consumes equal to factory specifications which is 3.9l/100, its fuel consumption is 6.7l/100 in urban and is not bad for the proper family car.

First Drive

Engine and Transmission

New Golf has got three different petrol engines, 1.2 TSI 105 HP, 1.4 TSI 122HP, 1.4 TSI 140 HP and two different types of diesel 1.6 TDI 90 HP, 1.6 TDI 105 PS. Because our test car has a TDI engine it has technology whose name is common rail direct injection. As a result, it develops  105 bhp from 3000 to 4000 rpm and 250 Nm torque from 1500 to 2750 rpm hence Golf gives you lots of fun thanks to its 1313 kg curb weight. New Golf great car for daily routines and due to the DSG gearbox it has astonishingly fast gear changes as well. The engine takes 10.7 sec to reach 100 kph from a standstill and the maximum speed of the new car is 192 kph.

Equipment and Price Tag

New golf is starting from 57.000 Turkish Lira as 1.2 TSI BMT 105 PS with a midline plus package. If you want an automatic gearbox whose proper name is DSG which is kind of a double-clutch gearbox, you must pay 9k extra. If you want a diesel engine which is very economical you must pay 13k extra. Finally, if you want both of them like our test car you must pay 82.500 Turkish Liras. New golf has a very long equipment list like a Mercedes E class. Unfortunately, only a tiny bit of them is standard. Therefore, even though our test car is a comforting package and also has an 82k price tag which is almost second-hand c class money there is no useful equipment at all. To get cruise control, rainy, park, light sensor and satellite navigation you need to have a Highline version of Golf and this is 8 k extra hence final price tag is 90k which is a brand-new Audi A3 price. To conclude, if you want to buy a Golf, you should get much basic one which is 1.2 petrol and manual version and has a 55k price tag.

Verdict

New platforms and efficient engines make the car the best Golf ever. Its DSG gearbox, brilliant exterior and interior design distinguish Golf from other c class compact hatchbacks. Therefore, it is obvious that Golf’s competitiveness aims at luxury car makers such as Audi, Mercedes and BMW, not Ford, Peugeot or Renault like the outgoing model does.
